What is Asherman syndrome (Sy Asherman) and why is it important?

Asherman syndrome (intrauterine synechiae) is an insidious condition that occurs when scar tissue (synechiae or adhesions) forms inside the uterus. It most often occurs after repeated curettages, caesarean section or uterine fibroid surgery. Asherman's syndrome prevents the normal growth of the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which causes problems with conception.
Why is it important?

The diagnosis of Asherman's syndrome cannot be established on the basis of a routine ultrasound examination, which is why it is often missed. This can significantly prolong the diagnosis and treatment of patients struggling with sterility.
The treatment is done hysteroscopically, using endoscopic scissors to cut the synechiae (adhesions) for minimal damage to the rest of the uterine tissue.
