Laparoscopy

Diagnostic & Treatment
Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a modern minimally invasive surgical technique used in gynecology for both diagnostic and operative purposes. It is also called "keyhole surgery" as it is performed through several small incisions in the abdomen instead of one large cut.

Indications

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Fertility investigation
  • Removal of fallopian tubes or ovaries
  • Chronic pelvic pain

The procedure

Under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes 2–3 small incisions (5–10 mm) in the abdominal area. A laparoscope — a thin tube with a camera and light source — is inserted through one of them. Carbon dioxide is used to inflate the abdomen for better visualization. Surgical instruments are inserted through the remaining incisions.

Advantages over traditional surgery

  • Much smaller incision and scar
  • Less pain and shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery (2–5 days vs. 4–6 weeks)
  • Lower risk of infections and complications
