Removal of condylomas - Condylomas (HPV)
Condylomata (condylomata acuminata, genital warts) are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Condylomas look like warts on the finger (small bumps, they look like cauliflower), they can be small (about 1 millimeter) or much larger. Like other warts that appear on other parts of the skin, genital warts are caused by a virus - Human Papilloma Virus, HPV. There are more than 100 types of human papillomavirus, but only a few highly contagious types cause warts. These types of viruses are transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. It is estimated that 2 out of 3 people who had sexual contact with an infected person will get condylomas. They usually appear in the first 3 months, but they often appear after several years. What are the symptoms? It is most common to see warts in the genital area. In women, they appear on the labia majora and minora, at the entrance to the vagina and less often in the vagina and cervix. In men, they appear on the penis (on the foreskin, at the opening of the penis, and it is possible that they also appear at the root of the penis). They can occur around the anus or in the mouth and throat during oral sex. Burning or itching in the genital area is possible. Often condylomas do not cause any symptoms. When to go to the doctor? If you notice warts in the genital area or your partner has warts, you should see a doctor. Genital warts can be a serious health problem and treatment should not be delayed. Human papillomavirus can cause cervical cancer and is also associated with other types of genital tumors such as cancer of the vagina, anus, and penis. The good news is that the types that cause warts do not cause cervical cancer, but simultaneous infection with several types of HPV is possible. How is it treated? Often, some condylomas cannot be seen with the naked eye. In this case, the doctor will use acetyl acid to lighten the warts and then localize them with a colposcope. Treatment of condyloma is possible by local application of drugs directly to the condyloma or by some of the surgical removal techniques. It should be borne in mind that by removing the warts, we do not remove the virus, so the recurrence of condyloma is sometimes possible even after treatment. The removal of condyloma is done in different ways and the treatment is individual. Methods include: Electrocauterization. Electric knife that removes warts with electric current. Cryotherapy. By local application of liquid nitrogen, we freeze condylomas. Freezing causes blisters to form around the condyloma. During the healing process of the skin, the blisters along with the warts fall off, and a new skin appears. Laser therapy. The light beam is applied to remove multiple changes - it is more expensive than other types of therapy and due to the impossibility of precise penetration depth, it leads to difficult wound healing, sclerosing of the scar and chronic pain. Surgical removal. Surgical excision of warts with local anesthesia. Preparations for local application. The most commonly used preparations are based on Podophyllin or trichloroacetic acid (TCA). How can I protect myself and what are the complications? HPV can be transmitted from any part of the infected skin, but using condoms significantly reduces the risk. If you notice condylomas in yourself or your sexual partner, avoid sexual intercourse until the condylomas are cured. It is extremely important for women to go for regular gynecological examinations and Pap smears, which can detect changes in the vagina or cervix that are caused by the virus. If you have had condylomas, a Pap test is recommended every 6 months. Certain types of HPV cause cervical cancer, so vaccination with the new Gardasil vaccine, which protects against the most dangerous types of HPV, is advised. You can receive the vaccine in our office. Dear, due to the large number of questions and the size of the page, please ask questions in the forum by clicking on this link.
